ABC Children's Aid's partnership with Kenya
In the fall of 2017, ABC Children's Aid began a partnership with Mathare Children's Education (MCE) in Nairobi, Kenya. MCE supports over 230 children studying in kindergarten, primary school, vocational school, high school and university. MCE also runs a boarding school with 80 places, where many of the children are former street children who have made exceptional progress and show great academic and social commitment.
Sustainability and everyday life
The children at the boarding school take care of their own chickens to produce eggs, which increases their protein intake and generates extra income from the sale of excess eggs. The income is used to improve their diet and buy necessities, such as vegetables.
Education and achievement
MCE places great emphasis on the arts and academic achievement. The poetry group participates annually in the Kenya Music Festival and has achieved great success — including winning preliminary competitions and reaching the national finals. Such participation boosts the children's self-confidence and creativity.
Staff and service
MCE works with a close-knit team of teachers and social workers who ensure that the children receive care and access to education, healthcare and social services. Social workers assess the families' circumstances and those living in the worst conditions are selected for the support system.
School work and division of the school year
The school year in Kenya begins in January and is divided into three semesters with exams at the end of each semester:
- Kindergarten: 3–5 year olds
- Elementary school: grades 1–8 (uniform exam at the end of grade 8)
- Secondary school: Form 1–Form 4 (final exam gives the right to higher education)

The capital, Nairobi, lies at an altitude of about 1,800 m. Swahili is the official language and English is widely spoken. The country gained independence from Britain in 1963 and is made up of 54 ethnic groups.
Challenges in Nairobi and the Slums Despite development, many people face major social challenges: large slums, high unemployment, health problems and corruption have created widespread hopelessness.
In Nairobi, many people live in cramped conditions without basic services, and daily life is often difficult. Projects like MCE play a vital role in providing children with support, security, and opportunities for the future.
